Colombia Visas in 2026: Which Visa Fits You? (Digital Nomad, Retirement, Investor and Residency)

Colombia Visas in 2026: Which Visa Fits You? (Digital Nomad, Retirement, Investor and Residency)

The short answer

  • →Most Western passports (US, Canada, UK, EU) can enter Colombia as tourists for up to 90 days, extendable by 90 more, with a hard cap of 180 days per calendar year.
  • →Staying longer means a visa. There are three families: V (visitor, e.g. digital nomad), M (migrant: retirees, passive income, investors, spouses) and R (resident).
  • →In 2026 the digital nomad and pension visas need about COP 5.25 million a month (3 minimum wages); the property investor visa needs property worth at least COP 612.8 million (350 minimum wages).
  • →Old sticker resident visas must be exchanged for the electronic visa by 31 October 2026.

I’m Gio, the Medellín Consultant. After more than ten years here, and going all the way from tourist to naturalised citizen myself, I can tell you the visa system is far more knowable than it looks. You don’t need to understand every category. You need to know which lane fits you, what it costs to qualify, and the handful of places where applications get sent back.

Deadline alert: old resident visas (31 October 2026)

If you hold a resident (R) visa in the old sticker format, especially one that says “INDEFINIDA”, it must be swapped for the electronic visa by 31 October 2026 (Resolución 9316 de 2024). The residence is indefinite; the old sticker format isn’t. If that’s you, do it this week. Details are on the Cancillería site.

How long can you stay in Colombia as a tourist?

Tourist entryThe rule
On arrival (PIP)Up to 90 days, stamped at entry.
Extension (PTP)Up to 90 more days, requested online from Migración Colombia before your current permit runs out.
The hard cap180 days per calendar year (January to December), continuous or not. Not per trip.

Overstaying leads to fines and can lead to deportation and a ban on re-entry. Count your days across every trip in the calendar year.

The three visa families

Colombia’s visas are set by Resolución 5477 de 2022, and they come in three families:

  • →V (Visitor): temporary stays with a specific purpose, like digital nomads. Time on a V visa doesn’t count toward residency.
  • →M (Migrant): you’re settling here: retirees, passive income, investors, business owners, spouses, workers. Time on most M visas does count toward residency.
  • →R (Resident): permanent residence, reached through time on qualifying M visas or directly with a large registered investment.

The main visa lanes in 2026, with the numbers

The law sets the amounts in SMMLV, Colombia’s monthly minimum wage, which is COP 1,750,905 in 2026 and changes every January. Dollar figures are rounded at about COP 3,175 per dollar (mid-October 2026).

LaneWho it’s forKey requirement (2026)Leads to residency?
Digital nomad (V)Remote workers paid from abroad3 SMMLV a month: about COP 5.25M (≈ US$1,650), shown in 3 months of statementsNo

Other lanes exist too: spouse or partner of a Colombian, work, study and Mercosur. The full list is in Resolución 5477 de 2022, and applications go through the Cancillería’s online form. Plan for up to 30 calendar days of processing.

The investor visa runs on how your money arrived

This is the one that catches buyers. For the property investor visa, the money has to come in through the formal exchange market and be registered as foreign investment. Cash, a friend’s account or a payout in pesos may not count, however much you paid. I explain how to do it properly in Bringing Money into Colombia, and how the purchase itself works in Buying Property in Medellín.

Why do-it-yourself applications get rejected

The online form is the easy part. These are the five places people get stuck:

  1. 1.Paperwork from home that isn’t ready. Foreign documents usually need an apostille and an official Spanish translation, and the order you do them in matters.
  2. 2.Bank statements in the wrong shape: the wrong period, the wrong currency or missing stamps.
  3. 3.Applying too late. Leaving it until you’re close to your 180-day tourist limit leaves no room for a request for more documents.
  4. 4.Investment money that arrived the informal way and doesn’t count.
  5. 5.Forgetting the step after approval. Visas of more than 3 months come with a deadline to register with Migración Colombia and get your foreigner ID card (cédula de extranjería).

Visas and tax are two different clocks

Your visa decides whether you can stay. Your days decide whether you’re taxed. Spend 183 days or more in Colombia within any 365-day window and you become a tax resident, taxed on worldwide income. I covered what changed this year in Colombia’s Wealth Tax in 2026.

Where it’s worth paying for help

If you’re a straightforward digital nomad with clean statements, you can do this yourself with the table above. Where it pays to get help is when the visa is tied to money: an investor visa on a property purchase, a business-owner visa, or a family move. A wrong sequence there doesn’t just delay you; it can mean an investment that doesn’t count toward the visa you bought it for.

The exact document order, the apostille and translation sequence, templates and real timelines are in Blueprint 1: Ground Zero Logistics. Or bring your passport, income type and plans to a Strategy Session and we’ll map the right lane and the sequence with you.

I’m an operator, not an immigration lawyer: this is current to October 2026, and the rules and amounts change every January. Confirm the current requirements with the Cancillería before you apply.
